The writer and playwright Paul Heyse (1830 Berlin - 1914 Munich) belonged to Menzel's inner circle of friends. Heyse's mother, Julie Heyse (1822-1862), nee Saaling, was a distant relative (cousin) of composer Felix Mendelssohn's mother.
