Erich Dummer

Self-Portraits,

A Collection of Ten,

1910-1929, oil paintings

The Lübeck artist Erich Dummer (1889-1929) is today most known for his self-portraits.  His introduction to studio art was at the Katharineum in Lübeck.  He left Lübeck in 1909 for training in Weimar at the Grand Ducal Saxon Art School [Großherzoglich-Sächsischen Kunstschule]; then moving to Munich in 1910 to attend The Academy, and thereafter to Berlin for further study.  It was at this time that Dummer discovered the self-portrait as a window to the soul and revisted the theme many times over the next two decades.  In 1914, he returned to Lübeck, where, in 1928, a year before his premature death at age 39, Dummer was the focus of a retrospective exhibition "Twenty Years of Self-Portraits" ["Zwanzig Jahre Selbstbildnisse"].  The Daulton Collection owns ten of Dummer's self-portraits.
