Julius Diez

Toadstools,

after Edward Okuń,

watercolor, circa 1906

Julius Diez (Nuremberg 1870 - 1957 Munich), after Edward Okuń (Polish, Warsaw 1872-1945 Skierniewice)

Toadstools (Fliegenpilze)

watercolor over pencil

24,5 x 33 cm

circa 1906

signed lower right: Jul. Diez

The original version of this composition by Polish artist Edward Okuń was published in the periodical Jugend in 1906 (Nr. 45) with the title "Wo die Buchen Dämmern" ["Where the Beeches Dawn"].  Julius Diez was an employee at Jugend and one of its main illustrators; during his time at Jugend, Diez presumably encountered the work of Okuń, one of Jugend's contributors.
