Discussion:
Some of the drawings show pentimenti, on which Fidus reconsidered the lines of his figures.

"Fidus, eigentlich Hugo Höppener, wird in Lübeck als Sohn eines Konditors
geboren. 1887 tritt er in die Münchner Akademie ein und lernt im selben Jahr
Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach kennen, der einsam in einem Tal - Höllriegelskreuth bei
München - lebt. Bis 1889 ist er Schüler des Malers und extremen Lebensreformers
und erhält von ihm auch sein Pseudonym. In dieser Zeit ist er auch an der
Vollendung von Diefenbachs Relief 'Per aspera ad astra,' das 68 Meter
Länge mißt, beteiligt. Von 1889 bis 1892 studiert Fidus bei Nikolaus Gysis in
München, anschließend übersiedelt er nach Berlin und unternimmt zahlreiche
Reisen, die ihn u. a. nach Norwegen, in die Schweiz, nach Italien und Istrien
führen. Er wird daneben Mitarbeiter der Münchner Zeitschiften Jugend und Simplicissimus. 1898 stellt er erstmals bei
Gurlitt in Berlin aus. Zweifellos liegen dem Œuvre des Künstlers die Ideen der
Romantik zugrunde. Ihre Umsetzung finden sie stilistisch im reinen Jugendstil.
Deutlich wird dies auch in der Linienführung der hier vorliegenden Entwurfzeichnungen
für die Publikationen Karl Henckells, deren Motivik durchweg schönleibige junge
Frauen und Männer zeigt. Deren Nacktheit gepaart mit überzeitlichen Symbolen
wie Sonne und Mond oder verschiedenen altertümlichen Handwaffen eröffnet dabei
Assoziationen zur Gestaltenwelt der griechischen und nordischen Mythologie.
Briefwechsel belegen, das Henckell und Fidus geschäftlich und wohl auch
freundschaftlich miteinander verbunden waren. Zudem bezeugen die
handschriftlichen Besitzervermerke Henckells auf einem Teil der Zeichnungen
dessen besondere Wertschätzung der Darstellungen." KK
["Fidus, actually Hugo Höppener, was born in Lübeck as
the son of a pastry chef. In 1887, he joined the Munich Academy and in the same
year met Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach, who lives alone in a valley -
Höllriegelskreuth near Munich. Until 1889, he is a pupil of the painter and
extreme life reformer and receives from him also his pseudonym. During this
time, Fidus is also involved in the completion of Diefenbach's relief "Per
aspera ad astra," which measures 68 meters in length. From 1889 to 1892, Fidus studied with Nikolaus Gysis in Munich, then moved to Berlin and undertook
numerous trips, including to Norway, Switzerland, Italy and Istria. He will
also worked for the Munich magazines Jugend and
"Simplicissimus." In 1898, he exhibited for the first time at Gurlitt

["Undoubtedly, the artist's ideas are based on the ideas of
Romanticism. Their implementation can be found stylistically in the pure Art
Nouveau style. This is also evident in the lines of the design drawings for the
publications of Karl Henckell, whose motifs consistently show beautiful young
women and men. Their nudity paired with timeless symbols such as sun and moon
or various ancient hand weapons opens up associations with the gestalt world of
Greek and Norse mythology. Correspondence proves that Henckell and Fidus were not only on business terms, but also connected as friends. In addition, the handwritten
owner notes of Henckell on some of the drawings attest to his particular
appreciation of the representations."] KK
