This sheet is the highly-finished preparatory drawing for plate V of Schwimbeck's portfolio of etchings "Werden und Vergehen" ["Creation and Death," also known as "Becoming and Passing Away"], published in 1919 by the Munich publishing house Parcus & Co.
The Daulton Collection owns finished preparatory drawings for five of the plates of that portfolio.
