Ludwig Fahrenkrog (Rendsburg 1867-1952 Biberach an der Riß)
Study of Christ on the Cross
1891
black chalk with white heightening on greenish-grey wove paper
56,4 x 44,8 cm
inscribed lower left (... "Kreuzigung"), signed ("Fahrenkrog"), and dated ("91")
condition: Several losses in the paper at the edges, which have been professionally relined; isolated handling creases.
This drawing was probably a study for Fahrenkrog's oil painting "Kreuzigung Christi" ["Crucifixion of Christ"] of 1893, for which he was awarded the Großer Staatspreis (Rompreis der Akademie) [Grand State Prize (Rome Prize of the Academy)]. Apparently, the city of Mülheim an der Ruhr acquired the painting; circa 1900, it was on loan by the artist to the city's Stammhauskirche [main church].
For a very similar composition in 1903, see the drawing "Es ist Vollbracht" ["It is finished"] published in: Claus Wolfschlag, Ludwig Fahrenkrog, Das goldene Tor: Ein deutscher Maler zwischen Jugendstil und Germanenglaube (Dresden: Verlag Zeitenwende, 2006), pg. 32.
