"Der lustige Baum" ("The Merry Tree")

circa 1918

pen and black ink on paper

circa 20,7 x 17,4 cm

signed in pencil lower right in the image: "F.Schwimbeck"

signed again on verso

"From dense ink pen hatching, Schwimbeck creates an eerie scene related to the theme of 'death.'  The lines are so vehemently drawn into even deeper black that the pen tears open the surface of the paper again and again, and only a few light areas emerge from the dark."  B
