Georg Gelbke studied from 1901 to 1907 at the Dresden Academy with Oskar Zwintscher, Richard Müller and Gotthard Kuehl. And Gelbke's early work in particular shows the profound influence of his teacher Zwintscher. See. for example, Gelbkes's 1909 painting "Frühling" ["Spring"] in The Daulton Collection, on this website.
In homage to his revered teacher Oskar Zwintscher, who died prematurely at age 45 in February 1916, Georg Gelbke illustrated a collection of dream-like poems by Zwintscher published posthumously by Kunstsalon Emil Richter, Dresden, in 1916 as 18 Gedichte des Malers Oskar Zwintscher [18 Poems of Painter Oskar Zwintscher]. The etched portrait of Zwintscher accompanies the first poem "Lebensregel" ["Rule of Life"]. Our impression of the portrait, above, is an artist's aside from the impressions published as a part of the poetry book. The Daulton Collection also owns copy number 1 of the deluxe limited edition of the book, formerly owned by the renowned collector Heinrich Stinnes:
