Discussion:
This sheet of sketches was acquired by The Daulton Collection as part of an auction lot consisting of four sheets of drawings by Alexander Rothaug. The Daulton Collection has identified the principal figure on this sheet as a sketch, top center, of the the goddess of the hunt Artemis with her deer. Furthermore, since aquisition of the sheet, The Daulton Collection has also made the remarkable discovery, below Artemis, of a sketch portrait, bottom center, of artist Egon Schiele smoking a cigarette, identified by the inscription "E. SCH." to the upper right of the head of the portrait. It is believed that Rothaug and Schiele knew each other because between 1912 and 1918 they had studios close to one another in Vienna, Rothaug at Hietzinger at Hauptstrasse 114 and Schiele at Hietzinger Hauptstrasse 101.
