Otto Weigel

Tod und Liebe cycle

1919

10 etchings and 4 proofs

A detail from Plate 10 of Otto Weigel's cycle of 10 original etchings entitled Tod und Liebe. Opus I [Death and LoveOpus I], published in 1919.  The Daulton Collection owns the entire cycle of ten prints, superb impressions, probably proofs, and, in addition, four proof impressions of pre-final states of four of the plates in the cycle.

The Leipzig-based German painter, graphic artist, and art educator Otto Weigel (Theißen1890-1945 Leipzig) was a pupil of Alois Kolb in Leipzig and of Peter Halm, with whom he studied drawing at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts [Königlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste] in Munich.  Study trips took him to Holland, Belgium, and Sweden.  Later, in Leipzig, Weigel taught at the Gaudigschule, the Thomasschule, and the Meisterschule des Deutschen Handwerks. His phantasmagoric graphic cycles show the influence of the similar work of his predecessors the fellow-Leipzig artists Max Klinger and Otto Greiner.
