Richard Müller

Etchings

twenty, from 1897 on

The Daulton Collection owns many etchings, including rare proofs of pre-final states, by Richard Müller, who was an important second-generation symbolist artist in the Dresden circle.  From 1888 to 1890, he studied at the painting school of the Royal Meissen Porcelain Manufactory. At the age of 16, he began studying at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts under Leonhard Gey and Leon Pohle in 1890, during which time he shared a studio with fellow symbolist Sascha Schneider. From 1895, he became a member of the "Goppelner School" artists' circle and met Max Klinger, who encouraged him to explore etching techniques. In 1896, he won the Rome Prize for his etching "Eva und Adam," followed by a study visit to Italy. From 1900 to 1935, he taught drawing at the Dresden Art Academy, was appointed professor in 1903, and was rector there from 1933 to 1935. His students included George Grosz, Hermann Kohlmann, and Horst Naumann.

"Schnitter" ["Reaper"]

(Günther catalogue: 147)

1899

etching in black-brown on heavy copperplate paper

47,6 x 59,4 cm

signed in pencil lower right: "R. Müller"

dated in pencil lower right: "30. Juli 99."

inscribed in pencil lower right "II Zustand I Abzug" ["2nd state 1st proof"] and "Platte vernichtet" ["plate destroyed"]

also numbered in pencil in the lower right plate corner: "II"

The Daulton Collection

This print is of the utmost rarity, probably unique.  Rolf Günther, Dresden, author of the catalogue raisonné of Müller's etchings, was aware of the print, but knew of no impressions.

Condition: The sheet is slightly soiled overall; the margins slightly foxed. The corners are slightly bumped and occasionally have small thumbtack holes, a larger water stain at the lower right.

"Müller, who first turned to etching in 1897 [actually,1896], demonstrated virtuoso skill in this technique just two [three] years later. In terms of motif and composition, this impressive work is reminiscent of Jules Bastien-Lepage's 1877 painting 'Les foins' ['Haymaking' or 'Resting in the Fields'], which was a seminal work in French plein air painting."  S

Richard Müller (Tschirnitz/Bohemia 1874 – 1954 Dresden-Loschwitz)

"Maus mit Walnuss" ["Mouse with Walnut"]

(not in Günther catalogue)

1900

etching on rolled China paper

6,1 x 16,1 cm

signed and dated in pencil lower right: "Rich. Müller 1900."

The Daulton Collection

A magnificent, harmonious print with wide margins.

Condition: minimal dusting; faint light staining; on the verso, a paper strip from an old mount; otherwise flawless.

Extremely rare: according to Rolf Günther, Dresden, author of the catalogue raisonné of Müller's etchings, no other example of this etching is known to date.

"As in his etchings 'Mouse with Nut' (Günther 56) or 'Mouse with Laurel' (Günther 57), Müller also brings the viewer so close to the mouse in this undescribed etching that one believes 'even a deep breath could frighten it and cause it to flee. He delicately stroked the animal's fur to create the illusion of its softness' (Wodarz, p. 192)."  B

A magnificent, striking proof, with narrow margins at the top and bottom, and very narrow at the sides.

Condition: minimal soiling, primarily on the verso; with barely noticeable foxing at the top left and other minor signs of wear; otherwise in beautiful condition.

"In its realistic and brutal quality, the image appears like a counterpart to Wenzel Hollar's dead, prone mole, which he etched some 270 years earlier."  B
